The Comprehensive Saviors of Uldum Preview

Saviors of Uldum is almost upon us and it’s time to repeat a tradition we started with Rise of Shadows, in which we will review the new cards, evaluate the strength of each class set and rank them against each other. We will also be ranking the classes based on their overall power level in an ambitious attempt to predict the upcoming meta.

Much like we’ve done in the past, we will also be producing a theory-crafting article in which we will present you with ideas on what kind of decks could be successful from each class in Saviors of Uldum. It will be released on Monday, August 5, a day before the expansion’s launch.

We do have to mention that the new set is one of the strongest we’ve ever seen, and certainly the strongest set since Kobolds & Catacombs. It will likely give the meta a very serious shakeup, with a significant number of cards that we believe are pushing the very limits of Hearthstone. When everything looks crazy, it’s hard to tell what’s most crazy.

While we’re aware that streamers received early access to the expansion and had the chance to test and theory-craft decks, we’ve intentionally ignored them. To be fair, we didn’t even have time to watch any content since we were buried in the work required to produce this article, as well as the upcoming theory-crafting one!

We evaluated cards based on their potential strength and scored them accordingly from 1 to 4 based on the guidelines below.

4- Meta-defining, or an extremely powerful card we have great confidence will see play. Translation: Busted!

3- Very strong card that we’re confident will see play. Translation: Nice!

2- Decent, or niche card with the potential to see play. Translation: Okay!

1- A card we don’t believe will see competitive play, for whatever reason. Translation: Meh!

For neutral cards that we believe will see play, we’ve also listed the classes that are most likely to use them.

Each class section ends in our final thoughts regarding the class’ prospects and ranks it.

  1. One more thing about the Warrior quest: Yes it does conflict with Madlad Boom but I think H4xx0r Warrior will be its own deck and even be very good (like tier 2). Warrior is already on the verge if being broken, and imo the Bomb-Control-Quest dark triad of warrior decks will dominate the meta. Madlad Boom will finally be nerfed.

  2. My 2 cents:

    – You’re overrating the Druid quest. You’re underestimating the huge tempo loss of having to spare mana on the first turns. Druid is a class that naturally struggles with tempo and this is making things worse. If there were more cards like Oasis Surger that are insane when the effects arr combined, it could hve been viable, but those that exist are too scarce. I can see it being viable later expansions.

    – Similarily you’re overestimating the warlock set. The quest sucks, we agree on that (it’s even worse than Lakaari Sac!) but the lackey synergy doesn’t compensate for that. Youre way too optimistic about EVIL summoner, its harder to activate than you think. Will see play for sure but its not insane.

    – Bug Collector is the sleeper neutral common of the set. It’s excellent tempo and fits in a wide variety of decks. I may be completely wrong but if im right i’ll take credit. Jar Dealer and Pit Crocolisk could see some fring constructed play.

    Apart from that, I agree with the rest of your analysis.
