The Comprehensive Day of Rebirth Preview

Herbivore Assistant

This card is comparable to Houndmaster. Rush is a stronger keyword in the late game, as we can play a beast and immediately give it rush, but taunt is a stronger keyword in the early game, when we are likely buffing a beast we summoned on a previous turn.

Herbivore Assistant might be cheaper, but we do not think it is a drastically stronger card. Considering that Houndmaster was not a constructed worthy card after 2015, it is hard for us get behind Assistant.

Holy Eggbearer

A 2 mana 1/2 that tutors a minion is okay. It makes it a bit stronger than a Novice Engineer. Eggbearer can only be used if our deck runs 0-attack minions, which are usually eggs. Decks will not try to include eggs just for the sake of running Eggbearer, so this belongs in egg decks and nothing more.

Crater Experiment

This card’s baseline stats are awful. A couple of Spider Tanks are not worth 5 mana, especially when they are only triggered by playing a tribal minion a turn before. While Kindred on an Amalgam can be considered trivial to activate in some decks, it is undoubtedly weaker than a battlecry, which is 100% guaranteed.

Only decks with specific tribal synergies can consider the card, and even then, Crater Experiment does not seem that strong. For example, it is slow in Quest Shaman or Quest Paladin, as it costs a whopping 5 mana for one or two quest ticks. It might be worth it in Quest Paladin simply due to the scaling stats potential, but it is worse than a Murloc Tidehunter when it comes to taking advantage of the permanent buff.

Not sure why this card is so much worse than Saronite Chain Gang.

The Egg of Khelos

This egg requires breaking it 5 times before it summons a massive 20/20 minion. With each break, another egg is summoned with the same stats.

If we assume a best-case scenario where we play this egg on turn 3 and proceed to break it every turn once, we will summon a 20/20 on turn 8. In a deck fully dedicated to breaking the egg repeatedly and consistently, The Egg of Khelos is not a realistic threat before the late game.

Is a 20/20 on turn 8 even good, considering how much we need to invest to make it happen? We need our deck to have a multitude of buffs or destruction effects. We need to tutor this egg to play it early enough. It does not have charge, or rush, or even taunt. It can be removed by every non-damage-based removal.

We do not think this card is worth building an entire deck around. The fact Khelos does not have a single useful keyword on its body, makes us extremely sceptical of its competitive prospects. Big vanilla minions do not win constructed Hearthstone games.

Beast Speaker Taka

Legendary class beasts tend to be sizeable, so Taka is likely to represent a big body that summons another big body when it dies. Taka does not immediately protect us or impact the board, but it is worth a lot of stats for the cost.

The question is whether we would play a 7-mana minion that is strictly a stat bomb, without any unique synergies with the deck we are playing. That is our biggest issue with the card: it is a standalone minion that does not further any specific game plan of the deck we include it in. It is merely a big threat.

These cards tend to not see play, as decks cannot afford to spend a lot of mana without setting up their compounding synergies. The only kind of deck that would be interested in Taka is a beatdown deck with a high curve. These decks do not exist in current Hearthstone because they are too easily punished by aggressive decks that outpace them and push them off the board, as well as defensive decks with a strong removal toolkit.

Unless Taka finds a way to synergize with other packages, it will struggle to see play.

  1. Behemoth mask better than advertised when you consider elise location. Even the single raptor off the 1 drop becomes a massive life gain and removes 2 minions with the 8/10 rush body.

  2. Wow, think I’m just crafting cards here. Have never not bought a miniset but guess this is a first. It’s like they aren’t even trying…
